Dr. George Keeps Giving

Indian Wells CA, Feb 11 2017 - The old saying "charity starts at home" should have a modern variation: "charity goes forever on a road trip!" Good hearted folks with a passion for automobiles have been getting together since their existence and possibility. Over a century of meeting experiences later, groups of like-minded and like-car people have discovered that other people love what they are doing too. People that care about automotive history tend to care a lot about other humanity as well. Sensing opportunity for good cause, automobile gatherings have become lighthouses and beacons for charitable causes.
As these things go, The Palm Springs Cruisin' Association started in a modest pizza parking lot over 25 years ago. This group describes itself as an "all volunteer non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote camaraderie among car enthusiasts and to stage and promote charitable car events." Seems hard to beat that mutually beneficial mission.
Taking advantage of the amazing Palm Spring winter weather and population swell, PSCA hosts monthly Cruise Ins on the 1st Saturday of each month from October to May. Their big and famous annual event is known as the Dr. George Charity Car Show, staged the 2nd Saturday in February. The event benefits the Desert Cancer Foundation - Dr. Sebastian George is honored as a leading oncologist that inspired others as a volunteer.
Today, the Dr. George event has grown immensely to the point where a massive parking lot is required just to organize the crowds flocking to the valley. You don't get $5 event parking very often - so no complaining that you need an $8 car wash to rinse the desert dust off after. There is no official cost of entry - a free event if you are that much yourself in need. Sure, you can look away as you pass the volunteer greeters accepting donations at the gate, but these dollars go to charity. You are only stiffing and fooling yourself in the heart.

Greeted by the gauntlet of firetrucks and gassers, it's a wonder how one expects to get through so many hundreds of beautiful cars and their owners. We knew we might be in time trouble when we spent the first ten minutes talking to the nice man with the '55 T-bird. It does take hours to go through row after row just looking - and we could spend days talking to everyone if they stayed put long enough.
