Making Friends: Steve McQueen Car Show 2015
1956 Porsche Speedster Outlaw
Chino Hills CA, June 6 2015 - The Boys Republic seems to have made a lot of good friends. The Friends of Steve McQueen for sure because of tenant history, but friends old and new come from afar to an annual pilgrimage to the Boys’ grounds. The Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show pulled off their 8th big fundraising event in spectacular fashion.
This year’s crowd support helped push the total raised to date over $1 million; a feat gratefully reinforced by major patrons Ron Harris, Chris Burns and Chad McQueen.

The Show is a major attraction by now, but there was a noticeable increase in the number of sponsors, vendors around the track perimeter, and a ton of people by early morning already. Attendees have a lot do, so best get to it. Given hundreds of vehicles of all stripes, you can take in a little of a lot or lot of a few. The Show is always heavy on the finest of Porsche, but one or two of everything else are out there somewhere – including a whole row of antique portable engine craft.
The awards are geared around what Steve McQueen might favor and trophies made of great classic car parts. The awards ceremony moves along nicely without a sleep inducing parade. Award winners here.
The Show was already filled with electricity, but it was fantastic to see a battery powered 914 and Zelectric’s VW bus back to back.
The glider ride was back in the sky again this year. While glider flight is emission free, the V8 motor on the cable pull trailer might puff for a minute. If flying without a power source isn’t in your comfort zone, you can take the Boys Republic Tour Tram – leaving every 15 minutes. You’ll get to hear very personal stories narrated by some of the folks that take care of the Young Men.
The Friends of Steve McQueen Show is only one day a year, but it’s pretty obvious that a great deal of time and effort goes into making it seem easy. Next year already has a plan – the theme is “The Getaway” a Steve McQueen movie. We should see a few more pickup trucks at the next show June 4 2016. If you like automotive things, make this event one of your inner net of things.
