Doug Fehan Corvette Racer

Unlike these guys, I spent my lifetime in Detroit. That pretty much eliminated skiing, surfing and women. But what it did allow me was a pretty intense childhood - both my grandfather and my father were in the automotive business. I was always around race cars and as a young man you just naturally developed an affinity for that. A gentleman that lived across the street from me was an engineer at General Motors and a friend of his bought a 1953 Corvette. I can remember being just a small kid and seeing that thing pull in that driveway top down - got to get a ride in it. As many of you I’m sure remember your first exposure to a Corvette, from that moment forward it became an aspirational vehicle for me.

We fast forward to maybe 10 years old. In those days you pretty much had one publication – Sports Car Graphic. Photographs were black and white and I remember in August usually, you would get the recap for the 24 hours of Le Mans. I thought to myself, how in the hell can you have a race for 24 hours? I was used to going out on Thursday night and Saturday night with my dad and my uncles and watching jalopies run around 3/8 or the 1/4 race track. Hell, those races lasted for about 26 minutes and 4 cars running at the end. Now these guys are going on an 8.5 mile race track and running for 24 hours.

I would get that magazine and I can tell you every night I would page through that, look at those photographs until I had that article fairly much memorized, committed to memory. Never thinking that I would ever have the opportunity, number one to even go to Le Mans, number two race at Le Mans or at the end of the day win that event seven times. So I think that gives you just a thumbnail sketch of what the Corvette has meant for me. It has been a lifetime of passion and love and devotion to the brand.

It’s an amazing vehicle that has an amazing following, an amazing customer base as we are witnessing here today. That is why I get such a thrill out of participating in these events because there is no other brand in the world, and I travel the world racing these cars, that has the following that Corvette has. It’s been just an amazing journey and amazing adventure for me. It’s been a career. www.specialcarstore.com/content/petersen-corvette-60th-anniversary-racers-panel-intro
