Pasadena CA, Oct 20 2019 - One of a Kind: Vehicles that Stand Alone
The 2019 theme "One of a Kind" comes easily to the ArtCenter Car Classic. Not just a one-off year car show, the ArtCenter's Car Classic has been dazzling for 18 years. Every year patrons get to gaze on some of the finest cars ever built - always a valley of vehicles that stand alone. What else can you say about this event? How do they keep topping it off year after year? How do they herd millions of dollars of cars into the place on time without losing their breath? Naturally, the answer lies in good design.
Good design is generally what the ArtCenter was founded on. The Pasadena campus features good design in a great location. The educational icon designed great programs, yielding great results and a great crop of alumni that went on to design great automobiles and made the ArtCenter famous. That fame attracts more fame - more celebrity, more visitors, more supporters, and ultimately more students clamoring to get a spot on the school roster.
The show has a lot of neat programs built into the schedule, including on-field interviews and under the tent discussions. It is very gratifying to be able to talk one-on-one with the actual folks that designed the cars presented on the lawn this day. It's great to talk to the people that taught them too, such as Stewart Reed and Richard Petrieuska - if you can find them between ushering in cars.
Jay Leno is a perennial marque figure here - his traditional fashionably late entrance gets whispered to all edges of the show. We missed taking pictures of his unique Mercedes factory transporter because we were waiting for the shadows to come of the body - and then he was gone. This is like missing the Pope when he comes down your street.
Plenty of big names come across the audio system over the course of the day, led by a trio of automotive experts - Emcees:
Ed Justice Jr., President and CEO, Justice Brothers, Inc. and co-host, Motor Trend Radio
Dave Kunz, Automotive Reporter, KABC-TV Channel 7 Los Angeles
Barry J. Meguiar, President and CEO, Meguiar’s Inc. and host, Car Crazy Radio
This year's Guest Speakers:
Chip Foose, Co-founder Foose Design and host of Overhaulin'
Tom Peters, Director of Exterior Design, Performance Cars, General Motors
Freeman Thomas, Director, Strategic Design for North America, Ford Motor Company (ret.)
Jeff Zwart, photographer and filmmaker, The Art of Racing in the Rain
One comment I have heard time and again from significant individuals here is that "if I could go to just one car show in a year, this would be it." It's really hard to beat the concept - a show more about design than cars. As usual, we don't envy the task of having to judge the incredible lineup of automobiles - but we'd take the chance if offered!
